ZOOM LEARNING EXCHANGE: Learning from learning and the art of Mangling

LEARNING FROM LEARNING: how do we implement research learning into our arts practice?

In this session Dr Mary Ann Hunter Assistant Dean, Transformation – Learning and Teaching at UTAS will discuss the importance of research and how this can become a meaningful support for our practice.

The Art of Mangling

‘Action research’, ‘reflective practice’, ‘researcher-practitioner’ – these are all terms that refer to processes that educators or teaching artists might engage in when they are ‘learning from learning’.   They honour the everyday researcher in us all, as we engage in understanding, deepening and evaluating our practices.

But these terms still speak to something of a binary (even if they’re trying to meld that binary, yes?).

Think of it: action/research, reflection/practice, research/practice.

So, what if we released ourselves of the binary, even as a referent.

What if we ‘mangled’?

Let’s take our understandings of some common practices of ‘learning from learning’ in our lives – say, mentoring and evaluation.  And let’s see what comes of some mangling within.

Sharing Practice today are Leigh Tesch and Julia Drouhin.

Art is the Research Leigh Tesch

We often think of research as something that we do to find out things about art, or about the situation or the people involved in the art.    In this practical workshop:   Leigh would like to explore that as artists we are inherently researchers, and that our arts practice and that of the children or young people we work with,  is a research process with rich outcomes.

French Australian sound artist and curator Julia Drouhin is interested in embodiment of invisible soundscapes that reveal friction in sociality and shift usual modes of transmission. She is currently exploring feminist nature of electromagnetic activities through ritualistic research that study micro and macro effects of fluid, sonic and social waves.

She will talk about research in her art practice as a continuous boost for curiosity and experiments as well as social support through her thesis about the art of walking and radio actions in public space in Paris in 2011 and her recent research and development international and local residencies.
