RECIPE FOR A STORY with Bella Young & Emma Skalicky
Bella Young and Emma Skalicky will be offering the opportunity for families to engage in storytelling workshops aimed as an introduction to creative writing and theatre performance skills.
Centred around exploring the recipe for a story - including ingredients and method - we will teach a combination of theatre, storytelling and visual art skills online.
Engaging in a face2face setting, we will encourage creative expression through physical, verbal and written means in a fun, energetic and engaging way. Families will collaborate in writing and/or drawing and performing their own stories or adventure with us together to create characters.
By participants exploring their own voices and stories, the workshop aims to promote confidence, teamwork, communication, imagination and self expression in a safe and supportive creative environment, facilitated by trained and experienced theatre makers and teaching artists, Bella & Emma!

Bella Young is a Tasmanian artist passionate about performance as an actor, dancer, teacher & director. Prior Co-President of PLoT Theatre Society, Bella teaches at React Drama School and Exitleft Performance Academy, works as a practicing artist with Second Echo Ensemble, and previous private artist at kdcworks. Bella teaches youth theatre workshops that aim to advocate an open and supportive community; providing a friendly, entry-level environment for skill development that is fun and engages young people in cross-discipline experiences surrounding performance. Last year’s training took her to: Geelong, Back to Back Theatre; Paris, Jacques Lecoq School; Southern France, OBRA Theatre Co; and Stratford-Upon-Avon, The Royal Shakespeare Company. In Hobart, she has directed student productions such as Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice and is part of the 2018 arTERLIER collective. Bella’s practise focuses upon solo and collaborative devised theatre and ensemble-based performance, welcoming people of all performance backgrounds, ages and abilities.
Emma Skalicky is a 25-year-old Hobart-based theatre maker and emerging playwright. She has worked as variously a performer, producer, director and writer for approximately 20 theatrical productions across the community and professional sectors of Tasmanian theatre. Having run PLoT Theatre from 2016-2020, Emma is passionate about providing space for young people to develop artistic ability in a safe, supportive and playful environment. She has directed "Doctor Faustus" (2017) and "Salome" (2020) for PLoT Theatre, and directed "Picnic at Hanging Rock" (2019) for Bad Company Theatre.
Emma has a First Class Honours in playwriting. Recent writing credits include Ophelia: A Decomposition in Two Parts (The Picton Grange Quarterly Review, Issue 6), and Panopticon (Currency Press) for ATYP’s Intersection: Arrival, performed at the Stables Theatre, Sydney. Her work particularly focuses on folklore, eco-criticism, and adaptations for the stage.
