LEARNING EXCHANGE: Art as Environmental Action

This Learning Exchange asks the question of what we can do as artists to contribute to social/environmental action - whether you are a musician or printmaker, painter or performer how can you add to the drive for change by contributing your artwork?

Kate Gorringe-Smith is our key provocateur for a discussion about the Overwintering Project at Burnie Regional Art Gallery December 2020, and will be joined by Lindall Kidd from BirdLIfe Australia and musicians Anthony Albrecht and Simone Slattery who make up the Bowerbird Collective.

Lindall Kidd will introduce us to migratory shorebirds and give context to their particular conservation needs. Lindall is a Migratory Shorebird Program Officer for BirdLife Australia. She is also studying for a PhD at RMIT's Interdisciplinary Conservation Science Research Group, investigating communication strategies to engage people in biodiversity conservation.

Anthony Albrecht and Simone Slattery’s current project is Invisible Connections, the creation of a body of work inspired by the East Asian-Australasian Flyway – the pathway flown annually by our migratory shorebirds from our shores to breeding grounds in Siberia, Alaska, and northern Asia.

The Overwintering Project will be at Burnie Regional Art Gallery 18 December 2020 to 7 February 2021 and will be in both the Main and Middle Galleries. This is an opportunity to create a work for the exhibition.

Find out about the project and watch videos here.
